it is 5:00. we begin with breaking news this morning out of kyrgyzstan. >> a military plane crashed this morning according to the emergency ministry which says there is no immediate word on casualties. kyrgyzstan hosts the u.s. base used for military members flying in and out of afghanistan. it's also used for c-135 tanker planes that refuel warplanes in flight and not clear yet what kind of plane was involved in that crash. now some breaking news here. we are following it down in southern california. two massive wildfires have consumed thousands of acres, damaged dozens of homes and forced hundreds of people to seek shelter. we are looking at some live pictures. this is the springs fire, the largest of the two fires that's burning in ventura county right now. and here are the latest numbers. at least 8,000 acres have been burned, 25 homes damaged. flames broke out early yesterday morning and it reached the pacific coast highway which was shut down

twice yesterday because of the fire. the fire is only 10% contained. the fire is burning 50 miles from l.a. the fire in jurupa valley has destroyed a couple of homes there, as well. cbs reporter edward lawrence has been following both fires overnight and joins us live with the very latest. good morning, lawrence. >> reporter: good morning, frank. yeah. the fire is actually expected to grow overnight. we are going to get a briefing in an hour. we are hearing about more than 8300 acres now. let me take a look. you can take a look at what's going on right now. that is the northern edge of the fire is what you're looking at right there. and we have been watching it creep down the mountain. there are 1,000 firefighters on that mountain trying to make sure this fire stays contained in a small area. the overnight hours brought little relief for firefighters battling the springs fire near camarillo, california. the blaze burned thousands of acres and is still growing. >> just getting very close, the fire. >> we are just hoping everything will be okay. >> reporter: strong santa ana

winds are pushing the flames, which have now crested a ridge and made their way down california's famed pacific coast highway. >> we have the highway as a good natural fire break and, of course, the pacific ocean. so right now what we want people do is recognize there are evacuation orders. >> reporter: thousands have been evacuated as firefighters set backfires hoping to control the burn, clear out brush and save homes. >> trying to get this buffer in so that we have some defensible black here to stop the fire. can't come up and threaten these homes. >> reporter: a storage tank of highly toxic pesticides exploded when the fire overtook a farm. officials issued an air quality warning and evacuated the area. it took hazmat crews several thundershowers bring the threat from the burning chemicals -- several hours who bring the threat from the burning chemicals under control. they are getting manpower and resources to put out the fire and save homes but this isn't the only fire in the state. >> now we're looking at the living room. >> reporter: at least two homes were destroyed in a blaze near banning in riverside county. that fire has been burning for

two days and is at 40% containment. >> i think we may be looking at a significant fire season. >> reporter: officials say the lack of rain and snow this winter combined with an early appearance of those santa ana winds means it's likely to be a long season for firefighters. and there's almost no wind here in ventura county at the moment. they do expect the wind to pick up as the sun comes up. there's still a red flag warning for this area. it's going to be hot and windy as the day goes on. reporting live in camarillo, california, edward lawrence, back to you. >> tough to fight fire overnight. how are they dealing with that? >> reporter: right. when the night fell, they tule grounded all the helicopters and the air tankers that are on this fire. so they are having to do it the old-fashioned way on the ground. there are 1,000 firefighters working with shovels, bulldozers trying to keep it contained in a box.

>> edward lawrence live in ventura county, thank you. >> the wind makes it so difficult. >> sometimes you almost have to get out of the way. when they're howling that strong, there's almost nothing you can do. it's going to be windy again today but finally seeing relief for them. we have some heat relief in our direction. record-breaking highs yesterday, today temperatures cooling along the coast and inside the bay. another mild start to the day in many spots, though. 63 in san rafael. 61 in oakland. 59 in san francisco. a cool 49 though in pacifica. high pressure, well, showing signs of weakening now. you have that low to the north. that's going to drop in over the weekend and that will eventually help cool us but we'll see that sea breeze blowing earlier today dropping some of the temperatures. yesterday we had some record temperatures showing up. 80s and some 90s today. probably back into the 90s at least low 90s inland. about 92 in livermore. 90 concord. but cooling off a good 13 degrees, about 75, still pleasant into san francisco. we'll have more on your weekend

forecast coming up. right now let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> thanks, lawrence. and on this friday morning now that they cleared the scene of that fatal accident in lafayette, things are relatively quiet across the bay area. we are seeing some overnight roadwork but now that we're past 5:00 a lot of it has been picked up so over night the richmond/san rafael bridge had several lanes blocked across the deck westbound. there now may be a little bit at the toll plaza but no longer delays on the traffic sensors. these are your most popular drive times usually for this time of the morning. westbound 580 is usually one of our first spots to get busy. anyway, so far it is still in the green. 20 minutes or so easy breezy all the way out of the altamont pass and towards the livermore valley. eastshore freeway looking good, as well. 19 minutes from the carquinez bridge to the maze. here's a live look outside if you are traveling towards silicon valley. that westbound 237 ride so far still in the green between 880 and 101. coming up, we'll get a check of mass transit. in the meantime, back to you guys >> thank you. it's been an all-nighter

for san jose firefighters. they are keeping an eye on a recycling plant that burned on east alma avenue last night. the place is full of bales of newspaper and cardboard. it caught fire about 6:00 yesterday afternoon and burned- out of control for almost four hours. no word yet on any cause and there were no injuries. santa clara county authorities have released a woman accused of planting tainted bottles of juice at a south san jose starbucks. prosecutors say ramineh behbehanian could still be charged. a fire department test determined that the juice contained rubbing alcohol which could lead to an attempted murder charge. but the district attorney's office says formal tests are not complete so for now, there's not enough evidence to legally detain the suspect any longer. >> that's just horrible. i mean, it scares me because what if she comes in here again and does it again? >> behbehanian was arrested monday night. police tracked her down by a license plate number written down by a worker at the snell

avenue starbucks. 5:07 now. we are following some developing news on the search for a missing teenager from danville. 15-year-old madeline landgill who goes by maddie is considered at risk. she was last seen by her family as she left their home at 6:00 last night. she is 5'5", 130 pounds, reddish brown hair, brown eyes, last seen in jeans and a black nirvana t-shirt. they are looking for her this morning a woman who said she may have seen a child killer in the foothills has recanted her story now. she had reported seeing a man running from leila fowler's house in calaveras county just before the 8-year-old was found stabbed to death on saturday. but she is now recanting her story. >> as of now it has become clear that this witness is no longer credible. we are unaware of what her mindset is. she hasn't explained to us why

she did what she did. >> investigators now say it's very unlikely a placerville kidnapping suspect had anything to do with leila's death. the golden state warriors are getting ready to face the spurs as they advance in the nba play-offs. >> the warriors are going to the second round! >> and there you go. they win. the denver nuggets got off to an early lead last night but the warriors went up by 18 in the second half before denver rallied. golden state hung on to win 92- 88 to take the series in six games. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran is at the oracle arena. do you hear the echoes of the screaming fans still? >> reporter: i don't know. it's quiet here. probably a stark contrast from what it was last night because here at oracle arena it was a sold-out crowd. and you can bet that last night's excitement will continue on to today because

that rocked the vessel out its moorings. it slammed into two yachts overnight before a fish boat sparked explosives at an australia marina that rocked a vessel out of its moorings. it slammed into two yachts overnight before crashing into the rocks. authorities are treating it as suspicious. one of the crewmen who was drunk at the time is one of the suspects. this morning a solar powered airplane is about to leave the silicon valley for its first-ever trip across the country. kpix 5's anne makovec joins us now from moffett field to explain how it all works. it looks cool, anne. >> reporter: yeah. it's definitely a crazy looking plane with a little teen my body and very -- with a little teeny body and very large wingspans. the pilot just got in and they are leaving at 6 a.m. you can see by the looks of the plane that it's not so good in

wind. so luckily the weather is calm right now. on the runway at moffett field, this is called the solar impulse. and it gets all of its energy from 12,000 solar cells on its wings. the plane comes from switzerland. yesterday it took a 16 hour trip around the bay area as a final test run. this morning it is taking off for phoenix. but it's going to go slowly. it's going to be a 19-hour flight to phoenix. it's the first leg of a cross- country journey set to end in new york in july. average speed, 35 miles an hour. it's going to stop for four long layovers along the way to raise awareness about renewable energy. that is what it is all about. they raised money by private donors, international sponsorships they said. they can't give me a price on this or cost of the flight.

it all. this solar impulse weighs 3500 pounds and has 12,000 solar cells. >> good luck. usually we're "friday light" but you've been busy. >> a wrong-way driver caused a fatal accident blocking all lanes for several hours causing some folks to be a little late to work coming into work here because it was shut down overnight like 1 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. so that's back to normal but i want to take you out live towards the bay bridge. everything is good now getting into san francisco. this is a live look approaching the "s" curve heading towards treasure island. they picked up overnight roadwork approaching the bay bridge toll plaza. so yeah, everything is quieting down. let's go to the golden gate bridge. everything is looking better here, as well. in our first traffic hit around 4:30 this morning, we had some lanes blocked. we had two of the right lanes blocked in the northbound direction overnight. now, there may still be some lanes blocked because of overnight roadwork northbound approaching the waldo tunnel so

just a heads up. that's scheduled until 6 a.m. southbound in the commute direction looking good. mass transit by the way everything is off to a nice start. we have not seen any difficulties for bart, ace, muni and caltrain. they are good to go. that's a check of your "timesaver traffic." for the latest on your forecast, lawrence, it was so nice this week. walnut creek, though, got hot. >> you were loving it. you said it felt more like 100. >> that's what someone said. i was in a mall and they said -- >> notorious for high temperatures in the malls. [ laughter ] around the bay area maybe not record temperatures. still going to be hot in spots. starting out a little cool near the coastline in the 40s but 60s inside the bay and valleys. by the afternoon, i think we're back into the 90s in some spots inland but it will be a little cooler than yesterday. it will be sunny and milder inside the bay with some 70s and 80s. and 60s out toward the coastline where yesterday we even had 80s near the water's edge. high pressure in control although it's beginning to weaken somewhat. but only slowly today. so some heat relief coming in the form of a sea breeze. that's the going to determine the temperature along the

coastline and the bay. that will be a little tricky. but over the weekend this low is going to start to drop in toward the bay area. it will bring with it some cooler temperatures. and even a slight chance of some sprinkles as we get into sunday and monday. if you are traveling around the state today, it's going to be hot in the central valley. 94 fresno, 93 sacramento. about 85 degrees in yosemite and 74 degrees beautiful into monterey bay. our temperatures today still going to soar into the 80s in towards san jose. low 90s into morgan hill possible. 88 in palo alto. about 68 degrees though in pacifica. we'll probably see high temperatures coming in the morning hours and then by the afternoon that sea breeze cooks in and we start to cool down. east bay temperatures again, they are sheltered from those winds so they are going to go back to the low 90s. inside the bay numbers in the 70s and 80s, although 60s into daly city. next couple of days for the weekend, changes coming. it looks like back to normal, more clouds on the way sunday and monday, even a slight chance of sprinkles or light showers. >> wow. >> how about that. >> we need it. >> we need it. it's not going to be much but

they had some surprise all-r help in making sure that the last thing the golden state warriors wanted was to play game 7 in denver. >> they didn't want to go back to denver and they got a surprise from a player who a lot of people thought they would never see on the court again. doctors cleared david lee to play. he had a hip problem. he helped boost his teammates with a brief stint in the 1st quarter. just a couple of minutes. but the warriors didn't take the lead until steph curry drained two straight threes in the 3rd quarter. he also found andrew bogut who had his best game as a warrior,

now at pictures from the largest of the two fires. it's the springs fire in ventura county. you can see a lot of the emergency vehicles down there. at least 8,000 acres so far have been burned. 25 homes have been damaged. flames started early yesterday morning. a late surge pushed the fire all the way to the coast shutting down the pacific coast highway. the fire is only 10% contained. both fires are burning about 50 miles from los angeles. the overnight hours brought little relief for firefighters battling the springs fire. cal state channel island campus was evacuated as the santa ana winds blew the flames southwest. firefighters set backfires hoping the controlled burn would clear out brush and save some homes. >> we have a highway as a good natural fire break and obviously pacific ocean. so right now we want people to recognize that there are evacuation orders. >> the university has nearly 5,000 students that were

evacuated. more than 1,000 firefighters are battling both fires in southern california. a warning today for people who have respiratory problems. health officials are warning them to stay indoors until the air clears. there's a heavy layer of smoky haze over parts of the bay area. and it's blowing in from a number of wildfires just north of san francisco. but it's not blowing out very quickly. a lot of bay area cities broke records yesterday. we need some relief. >> it's starting to cool down a bit. >> i think we'll cool down in spots. it's still going to the in the 90s in the valley but we'll see a sea breeze mixing out the atmosphere and improving the air quality. over the weekend some big time changes even a couple of raindrops. outside right now, temperatures in the 50s and 60s inside the bay. a little cool as you approach the coastline. only 49 degrees in pacifica and 49 also in santa rosa. looks like this afternoon we are going to see the temperatures a little bit milder near the coastline maybe just inside the bay. and then over the weekend this low doesn't look like much but

it's going to drop back into the bay area. and as it does, it will bring with it some cooler air and even a slight chance of some light sprinkles or showers in the latter part of the weekend. temperatures yesterday up in the 80s and 90s. we broke records. this afternoon probably near records in some spots but we are going to cool things down especially into san francisco. they will be down about 13 degrees there at 75. still pleasant but hot in concord at 90. 92 the expected high in livermore. and 88 in san jose. much cooler temperatures over the weekend. we'll talk more about that in a moment. right now let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> thanks, lawrence. busy start, everything is quieted down across the bay area. so if you are traveling through vacaville, for example, there was an accident. it was just cleared out of lanes a couple minutes ago eastbound 80 approaching leisuretown road. westbound coming into the city and towards the macarthur maze, everything is pretty quiet. so here's your drive time as you can see from the carquinez bridge to the maze, that is 19

minutes. that's still in the clear. the only real slow spot is through the altamont pass through the livermore valley up to 23 minutes so a few brake lights closer towards vasco road. then we see some improvement. taking you outside, here's a live look closer towards the dublin interchange. and you can see those headlights moving westbound. so pretty typical for this time of the morning. san mateo bridge similar story no delays across the flat section of the span. a quick look at the nimitz as you pass 880 in oakland. you have a trip out of town for the weekend heading towards oakland airport, so far just cruising southbound all the way past the airport toward hayward. back to you. >> thank you. san jose firefighters have spent the night watching over what's left of a recycling facility on east alma avenue. they are keeping bales of newspaper and cardboard from flaring up. the plant caught fire around 6:00 last night. it took nearly 4 hours to get that fire out.

there were no injuries and they don't have a cause yet. just in from washington now. the april jobs report. the economy created 160,000 new jobs. the unemployment rate fell to 7.5%. unemployment was at 7.6% back in march. more on the nation's employment picture from cbsmoneywatch reporter ashley morrison in just a few minutes. boston bombing suspect johar tsarnaev has reportedly told investigators he and his brother tamerlan originally planned the attack for the 4th of july. a law enforcement official telling cbs news, tsarnaev said the date of the plan had actually moved up when the brothers finished building the bomb sooner than expected. meanwhile, coroner officials released tamerlin tsarnaev's body to his family yesterday. we're learning that a shooting at houston's largest airport may have been part of a bigger plan. according to officers there, carnell moore fired into the ceiling at the bush international airport yesterday. a homeland security agent shot

joins us from moffett field now where departure time is fast approaching about a half hour, right? >> reporter: yeah. even less. the plane is scheduled to leave here from moffett field at 6:00 this morning as soon as it has a little better light. it is a solar plane, after all, here on the runway behind me. it's called the solar impulse. and it gets all of its energy from 12,000 solar cells on its wings. the plane took a 16-hour trip around the bay area yesterday. the aircraft came from switzerland. they decided to make this historic cross-country run here in the united states because this is where aviation was born. this morning, the plane is taking off for phoenix, a 19- hour flight. it's going an average of 35 miles an hour. the first leg of the cross- country journey set to end in new york sometime in july. we spoke with the pilot, the one guy who is going to be in

this plane for this first leg earlier this morning. >> these new technologies, at the same time are environmental friendly, create jobs, make profits, sustain growth for the industry. so it's a win-win and we hope the political world will also globally understand that if we want to have a good future we need this clean technology. >> reporter: back live at moffett field, they're cranking up the propellers as we speak. those propellers powered by the solar cells which gather enough power during the day to power an 881-pound lithium battery that can go all night. they stopped the propellers just as i mentioned they were running those propellers. two pilots are going to be alternating throughout the

cross-country journey. just one in the cockpit at a time. the other travels in a helicopter. it's scheduled it land in phoenix at 1 a.m. normally commercial planes fly between 30,000 to 40,000 feet i'm told. this one can only fly at 25,000 feet maximum. but certainly much slower than a commercial airplane. we are counting down to liftoff. right now live on moffett field, anne makovec, kpix 5. >> we'll be watching. all right, anne, thank you. the solar impulse weighs 3500 pounds and has 12,000 solar cells. it's been getting a lot of solar power lately. >> i guess so. i'm amazed 3500 pounds and the battery itself weighs 800. there's not much left to the plane. >> that's all that's keeping them up there, too. >> a lot of sunshine to get those solar packs all charged up. looks like we'll see plenty of sunshine today and nice clear start to the day but some changes coming especially in toward the afternoon as high pressure is going to weaken somewhat. and we are going to see more of a sea breeze kicking along the coastline just inside the bay so that will start to cool

good morning. >> reporter: good morning. happy friday, everyone. some better-than-expected news on the jobs front of the the government just released its big monthly jobs report for april and it shows 165,000 jobs were added last month. and that the unemployment rate edged lower from 7.6% to 7.5%. most economists were predicting the labor department's report would show that 140,000 jobs were just added last month and that the unemployment rate would remain unchanged at 7.6%. and lower weekly jobless claims yesterday pushed wall street stocks higher. the dow was up 130 at thursday's close. the nasdaq was up 41 so better- than-expected news for jobs right now. >> on a friday. that's good. >> like my 13-year-old would say, text messaging is apparently so yesterday. >> reporter: i guess it is so 2012. but a wireless industry group says yes, americans sent more than two trillion text messages last year but that's down 5% in the past two years. but that was then. now the industry reports saying
